Associate Professor Armin Haller

Biography

Dr Armin Haller is an Associate Professor with a joint appointment at the Research School of Management (RSM) and the Research School of Computer Science (RSCS). He received his PhD in Computer Science from the National University of Ireland in 2010, as well as an MBA (Executive) from the University of New South Wales in 2017.

Armin was the MBA Director at RSM from 2017 to 2019, and Deputy Director of Engagement and Outreach from 2018 to 2019. He has been teaching Masters and PhD courses, and is currently convening Digital Transformation at RSM and Introduction to Programming for Data Scientists at RSCS. He supervises students at Honours, Masters and PhD levels in both Schools. Armin has received the College of Engineering and Computer Science Dean's Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning Category in 2016.

Armin's research interests include Knowledge Graph Engineering, Ontology Engineering, Linked Data, the Internet-of-Things and the semantic Web in general. He has received a number of research grants in these areas, most recently a $1.04m grant with the Department of Finance in 2018 and a $105k grant with ActewAGL, the major electricity utility in the ACT, in 2017.

Armin engages with the Australian ICT industry through his managing of the W3C Office Australia. He is also active in several W3C working groups, mostly recently he has chaired the Semantic Sensor Network Ontology working group. Armin is also a passionate evangelist of Open Government Data. He has been chairing the Australian Government Linked Data Working Group that aims to improve the accessibility of government data for the last 7 years.
