Advanced-Equipment Lab Hardware and Software

The Advance-Equipment Lab is equipped with of state of the art technology for use in behavioural research.

Tobii Eye Tracker

The TX300 eye tracker allows large head movements and collects data at 300 Hz. The system is designed for studies that require a higher sampling rate i.e. the need to study eye movements such as saccades, fixations, pupil size changes and blinks. The unique combination of a higher sampling rate and the large head movement box benefits eye tracking studies where freedom of movement is important.

Electrocardiography (ECG) and Galvanic Skin Response (GSR)

The BiosignalsPlux Researchers’ Kit includes sensors to measure heart rate and skin conductance and allows collection of data up to 1000Hz. The higher sampling rate allows researchers to obtain a high number of data points per second. Data from the ECG and GSR sensors has been synchronised with  data from the eye tracker using StimTracker, enabling researchers to identify physiological responses that related to specific events and eye fixations.

StimTracker allows correlation of eye tracker, skin conductance and heart rate data helping researchers identify when certain events occurred. With the exception of codes sent via USB, STIMTracker automatically detects the onset of events, avoiding delays incurred by operating systems.

Tobii Studio for Eye Tracking Data

Tobii Studio is offered by Tobii and allows researchers to design and run eye tracking experiments. It also allows replay, visualisation of the results and has statistical functions.

Noldus FaceReader

The Noldus FaceReader, allowing analysis and reporting  automatically analyses basic facial expressions for emotions. It also provides data related to participants’ characteristics, head orientation and eye gaze.

Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART)

The Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART) allows measurement of risk taking behaviour and is based on reward versus loss model. The participants are presented with a balloon and offered the chance of earning money by pumping up the balloon via the click of a button. Each click inflates the balloon and money is added to the participants’ account until a threshold is reached, at which point the balloon explodes. Each pump results a reward but also introducing an element of risk.

z-Tree is a software package used to developing and carrying out economic experiments.
