CBE Behavioural Labs Procedural Guidelines

Recruitment and Management of Participants

  • Recruitment and management of participants, as well as payments to them, are the responsibility of the researcher; and,
  • Researchers who do draw participants from CBE-managed Participant Pool must abide by the CBE Participant Pool Policy.

 

Number of Participants per Session

  • Due to limited capacity of the Multi-Purpose Lab (18 computers) and Advanced-Equipment Lab (1 computer for experiments involving physiological measures and 2 for other experiments), the maximum number of participants permissable at any one timeis 18 for the Multi-Purpose Lab and 1 in the Advanced-Equipment Lab if physiological measures are involved, or 2 if otherwise.

 

Lab Access

  • Upon arrival, the Lab Manager will issue the researcher with a key to the lab.Te researcher must return the key to the Lab Manger at the end of every session;
  • For every session, 15 minutes is allocated before and after the session's scheduled timeslot for setup and packup. It is the researcher's responsability to arrive early to make the necessary preparations (no more than 15 minutes before the start of your session) and depart within 15 minutes of the session ending; and,
  • If a researcher requires more time to prepare for a seesion or packup, a request can be made at the time of the booking request.

 

In the Lab

  • At the start of every sessions, the Researcher must take participants through the workplace health and safety presentation (WHS Presentation), which is copied to the desktop of all laptops within the lab; 
  • A profile on a Fileserver can be created to store digital data, however, this data must be removed at the end of every session;
  • With the exception of cold water, no food or drinks is permitted in either lab;
  • Participants must be remined to take care when drinking water as to not spill it on the equipment;
  • Participant consent consent forms (approved by the Ethics Committee) must be signed by particpants and collected at every session;
  • If you experience any issies with the software or hardware, please contact the Lab Manager;
  • Researchs must remind participants that lab computers are not for personal use;
  • Participants must not be left unattended at any time; and,
  • The lab must be locked if unattended.

 

After the Session

  • Researchers must remove all material brought into the lab at the conclusion of each session.

 

Licenses

  • Researcher must ensure that all the licence-related obligations of the software used are met. For example, if Ztree experiment software is used, the researcher must cite the following article in their paper: Urs Fischbacher (2007): z-Tree: Zurich Toolbox for Ready-made Economic Experiments, Experimental Economics 10(2), 171-178. E.g., write "The experiment was programmed and conducted with the software z-Tree (Fischbacher 2007)

 

Privacy Policy

  • Any personally idenifyable data is the responsibility of the researcher must be removed from the lab at the end each session; and,
  • Researchers must abide by all data privacy and security policies of The Australian National University.

 

Booking, Cancelling or Changing Time for a Lab Session

  • Bookings must be made at least 5 business days in advance of the first session;
  • Researchers wishing to cancel or change the time of a session, must do so via email to the Lab Manager at least 5 business days ahead of the original booking.
  • Requests to cancel or reschedule a session with less than 5 days notice will be counted towards the researcher’s quota (please see next section for more details) for both original and the new booking;
  • Lab books are not complete until a confirmation email has been received; and,
  • Neither of the labs can be reserved by an indivdual researcher for more than 24 hours within a one-week period.

 

Using CBE Behavioural Labs outside of Office Hours

  • Any researcher who needs to use CBE Behavioural Labs outside of office hours should contact the Lab Manager at least 3 weeks in advance of the first outsdie-of-office-hours session. The Lab Manager will then forward the "Terms and Conditions of Using CBE Behavioural Labs outside of Officer Hours" to the researcher and make other arrangements such as obtaining outside-of-office-hours access on the visitor pass. 

Allotted Quota

  • Academic staff and Post-Docs have an allotted number of hours per teaching semester that they can use to reserve time (combined for Multi-Purpose Lab and Advanced-Equipment Lab):
    • Academic staff = 50 hours;
    • Post-Docs = 30 hours; and,
    • PhDs and MPhil = 20 hours.
  • The above rule applies when the labs are at full capacity.

 

Miscellaneous

  • Advertising material is not to be posted on the doors or walls;
  • The Multi-Purpose Lab can be used for teaching if otherwise unoccupied and teaching labs are not available;
  • Participant pools are organized by relevant schools until further notice;
  • Academic staff, post-docs and research students from CBE are given priority over other Colleges, noting the Research School of Computer Science, ANU allocation; and,
  • Electrical devices, such as laptops or computers, that have not been issued with ANU safety tages are not allowed in the labs. 

 

Requesting for New Software

  • Requests for new software will be handled on a case by case basis; and,
  • A researcher may request the labs to pay for a new software, offer to pay for a new software themselves or install software available free of cost.
