Tamasin Abbs-Robinson, Master of Management

Tamasin Abbs-Robinson

Master of Management

Tamasin Abbs-Robinson is a consultant with a background in communications. She decided to build on her professional skills and experience by returning to university to undertake a Masters of Management.

Tam, why did you choose to do Masters of Management at ANU?

I chose ANU for its reputation, and the flexibility of courses on offer.

With the Masters of Management, you have your compulsory core subjects but it also allows you to do electives and that’s where you can specialise. If you put a little bit of time and thought into choosing which subjects to do, you’ll come out with a well-rounded degree that can help you in your chosen career.

Tell us more about the kind of work you do.

I’ve always been in the consulting space, I’ve had one in-house communications and PR manager role in my early twenties. From there I moved back into consulting for a large multinational firm.

When we moved to Canberra my twins were seven months old, and that was quite challenging. I resumed more consulting on a part-time basis with the Department of Defence. I found it was good to have that flexibility when my children were quite young.

You’re originally from Brisbane, what do you like about Canberra?

I like Canberra in the autumn. I love the fresh air and space here, and it’s an easy place to raise children. Canberra has a lot to offer. It’s a good place to live, work and study.

How have you found it, returning to uni?

I’ve really enjoyed going back to study again – I love learning! The depth and breadth of the subjects has been great. The people I have met through my courses have remained strong friends.

I enjoy challenging myself, juggling family, study, work, and then in the end being rewarded with good marks – it was a personal challenge to do well and so I’m really happy with my results.

Where do you hope your Master of Management will take you, in terms of your career?

I think a Masters of Management is a good qualification to have as a consultant. The study I’m doing enables me to expand my managerial skills and competencies such as developing others and team leadership.

Ultimately, I would like to secure an executive management position.
