Monique McLean – Bachelor of Actuarial Studies, 2017

When I found out I had been awarded a scholarship I was so excited. It has enabled me to fulfil a dream that had previously not been available to my family, as I am the first to attend university. My mother encouraged me to strive for the best education possible. So naturally I wanted to study at the College of Business and Economics (CBE) at ANU.

The tutors and lecturers at CBE are very passionate about their subject areas. They inspire me to pursue my passions and to discover what I’m interested in.

There are a wide range of courses and electives available at CBE, so I can tailor my degree to suit me. My scholarship allows me to take different courses that are outside my curriculum and broaden my skills and interests.

The scholarship has made a big difference to me. It relieves financial pressure, as there are always bills to pay. I also believe education is not only what we learn from textbooks, but the lessons taught by life itself. It’s been great to have some of the financial burden reduced and to focus on other things.

This year I have been able to get involved in SET4ANU, a mentoring program that helps first year students when they come to university. We support them to get settled onto campus, show them where everything is and assist with course enrolment. I’ve loved having the opportunity to help people.

I’m so grateful to have been awarded a scholarship. Students like me, from rural areas, often have dreams and aspirations of coming to university, but financial hardships may limit their ability to do that. By donating to a scholarship, no matter how modest it may be, you can change a person’s life. It’ll mean they can come to university and make a difference in the world. Without a scholarship, they might not be able to do that.

Receiving a scholarship has certainly changed my life. My time at ANU has been fantastic so far. Thanks to the opportunities that are available to me as a student and 2017 graduate of CBE, I’m excited about what the future has in store. Thank you so much to the donors who make this possible for students just like me.
