Keat Hui Ng, Bachelor of Actuarial Studies

Keat Hui Ng

Bachelor of Actuarial Studies

What are you studying, and why did you choose this degree?
I’m studying a Bachelor of Actuarial Studies. I first chose this degree because I heard it is a challenging profession and one for Mathematics-lovers!

How are you finding your studies so far?
I find the studies fun but at the same time very challenging especially when it comes to final year courses. Surprisingly, I have found Actuarial Studies different from what I perceived a Mathematics related course would be, it also comprises a lot of Statistics and Finance studies which I really like. The program is demanding and can pose some headache moments but once I resolve or understand problems, it gives me so much satisfaction in my learning.

What is the best thing about studying at ANU?
I really like the flexibility at ANU; you get to modify your own study plan and course schedule unlike most universities in Malaysia. Also, the university environment provides a really supportive place not only for studying but learning, socialising and living.

What are your career goals?
When I first started, I thought I would like become a professional Actuary but I are am really interested in the financial side of the program. I would like to pursue a position in a financial firm after I graduate.

Do you live on campus? If so, how do you find this experience?
Living on campus is such an amazing experience! I live in a residential hall and it provides a safe environment where I made a lot of friends from various cultural backgrounds. Student lives together in a supportive community and treat each other like family.

What do you enjoy doing outside of your study?
Outside of studying, I am involved in sports and ANU student clubs. Canberra is the perfect place for my morning runs and I joined the interhall badminton competition. I also currently hold an executive position in the Malaysian Students’ Organisation. Through my role as Academic Program Organiser position in my hall I received a Residential Hall Scholarship. I really enjoy this role that provides academic assistance and advice to fellow residents.

What is your favourite thing about Canberra?
I like Canberra for its tranquillity and quietness, unlike the hustle and bustle of cities like Sydney and Melbourne. I love the environment Canberra provides for a student; a paradise for studying and living a simple, yet fulfilling life.

What would you recommend to other students interested to study at ANU and live in Canberra?
I would definitely recommend students to come and study in the capital city of this great country. You get to study in a high quality university with a lot of opportunities to progress into research. You will get to meet so many awesome people from diverse backgrounds and make life-long friends.
