Gary Wang, Master of Accounting

Gary Wang

Master of Accounting

Gary Wang is building on his experience as a policy analyst in Beijing through studying a Master of Accounting.

He intends to bring together academic research with industry experience to develop a positive contribution to the community.

What did you do prior to your study at ANU?

I previously worked as a policy analyst in Beijing before studying at ANU. I have completed my undergraduate degree in social science from Tsinghua University in China.

What are you studying, and why did you decide to undertake this particular degree?

I am currently undertaking a Master of Accounting degree at the College of Business and Economics. I found the finance and accounting courses included in this program particularly helpful to complete my knowledge set. I have developed further insights of Australian businesses through doing this degree.

Why did you choose to study at ANU?

ANU is the top-ranked university in Australia with a strong background in academic research. It is a great pleasure to meet with the most talented students around the world. Besides, ANU has one of the most beautiful campuses in Australia, with a convenient location close to the city. I am currently living in Burgmann College, and I quite enjoy myself being involved with numerous activities held on campus.

What has been your favourite course (or who has been your favourite lecturer) so far, and why?

I really enjoyed the time undertaking the Taxation Law during my first year of study. Sonali is one of the best lecturers I have met. She has profound knowledge in the Australian taxation systems and she is willing to share it with students. Besides, I found this course very practical when I use the knowledge learned to prepare my own tax returns!

What is it about ANU that you think sets it apart from other universities in Australia?

ANU is very supportive of the professional development of international students. ANU offers various workshops and internship opportunities to students who want to further develop their skill sets and gain industry experience. For example, the CBE Internship Program provides students with opportunities to work for some of the most respectful employers in Canberra. Students are given the responsibilities to solve real complex challenges utilising the knowledge learned from their degrees. During my second semester at ANU, I was luckily enough to work as an intern at the Parliament of Australia through the Australian National Internship Program (ANIP). I would not gain this valuable experience had I not undertaken courses at ANU.

What are your career goals?

Career means more to me than material success. I am aiming to make a positive contribution to the local community. My long term goal is to become a research academic in accounting or corporate management. But in order to achieve that, I need to gain practical experience from relevant industries. My short term goal after completing the degree is to get exposed to as much industry experience as I could while keep updating my knowledge and skills.

What is your favourite thing about Canberra?

Canberra is a lovely city with friendly folks. Having spent my first 20 years in metropolitan cities like Beijing and Hong Kong, I quite enjoy the time spent in a city like Canberra. Canberra is big enough to provide me with heaps of fun during weekends and holidays, and is small enough to leave me with personal space for reflection.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about undertaking postgrad studies?

My advice is: be positive and be prepared! Postgraduate studies will open broader opportunities for your personal development. Be brave to make the first step and be prepared for any obstacles and challenges coming along the way!
