"...At ANU RSA [there was] some great role models who have left positive influences in my life, who have encouraged me to inspire colleagues, friends, students and my own family to reach their potential."

Why did I choose ANU – particularly RSA?

I chose to study at ANU because it is a world renowned university. The College of Business and Economics (CBE) and the Research School of Accounting (RSA) are recognized internationally for excellence in teaching and research. ANU is a brand name that people around the world recognize, particularly in a small country like mine (Samoa).

In the two years that I did my Master in Commerce, I was overwhelmed by the support from the lecturers, administrators and numerous other support services. From that positive experience, I was motivated to pursue PhD studies and it was only natural for me to choose to do my PhD at ANU RSA. The personnel, the atmosphere, the people, the resources and Canberra itself all combined to make the PhD experience a less painful and an unforgettable one. Not only for myself but my family who joined me during my studies.

What was the benefit for me of a PhD from ANU RSA?

There are several benefits of receiving a PhD from ANU RSA. Being a brand name that is recognized worldwide, ANU RSA has given me much to be proud of. As a graduate of ANU RSA, I am shown much respect by my colleagues and peers, particularly when they learn that I am a graduate of ANU RSA. Additionally, the knowledge and skills that I have received from my PhD programme have equipped me well with the necessary tools to succeed in any career I choose to follow, whether it be in academia, in business or in the public sector.

Besides the research knowledge and skills, there are many other skills such as computing, analytical, decision making, problem solving and even teaching to name only a few, that I am thankful to my PhD journey for.

It has taught me how to deal with challenges and learn from failure rather than fear failure, and most importantly, learning to endure. ...At ANU RSA [there was] some great role models who have left positive influences in my life, who have inspired me to inspire colleagues, friends, students and my own family to reach their potential.

What is life like after graduation with a PhD?

Life after graduation with a PhD has been very busy but rewarding. Although it is always great to be acknowledged for having survived the PhD journey by way of employment, it brings much responsibilities and expectations. At the same time, ...the skills and knowledge I have received during my PhD journey that I am now applying in my current role at the National University of Samoa.
