Shiqi Li off to University of Chicago boot camp

5 April 2019

Economics student Shiqi Li has been accepted into an all expenses paid trip to the University of Chicago where he will take part in the six week Open Source Economics Laboratory (OSE Lab) Boot Camp.

The OSE Lab bootcamp is designed to help build advanced computational skills for economic research and policy analysis. Instructors at the boot camp include Nobel Laureate Lars Hansen and other world-leading economists. It is an incredible opportunity for Shiqi, and another achievement in an already illustrious student journey.

Path to success

Shiqi is an international student from China and is studying his undergraduate degree on the Terrell International Undergraduate Scholarship. He also received the Economic Society Prize for Economics II Honours in 2017.

“I am very glad that I have been selected as one of the 25 student researchers by the OSE lab, and I will put in all my effort to study from the great lecturers and presenters. The OSE lab includes lectures in advanced economics, mathematics and computational skills, I think all of them will be very useful for my honours study and PhD application in the short-run. While in the long-run, the skills that I am able to get from this boot camp will also help me in my research.”

Pursuit of perfection

Shiqi is in his last semester before his honours year and has achieved High Distinction scores in all but one of his classes. He also completed an internship for the World Health Organisation in China as part of the College of Business and Economics GLOBE program.

When asked what advice he had for other students, Shiqi said:

“One must have a clear vision about future goals. A goal always points you in the correct direction and gives enormous motivation to move forward. Once a person has a clear vision of what they want to achieve, they become powerful. One can then move forward to research how to achieve that, and construct a plan of what to do next. The challenges along the way may be trying, but it's worth it.”
