Rebecca Ryan promotes NCP as Alumni Ambassador

19 March 2019

Rebecca Ryan is in her fourth year of a Bachelor of Economics/International Relations and is a New Colombo Plan (NCP) Alumni Ambassador.

The NCP is an initiative of the Australian Government that aims to improve knowledge of and partnerships with the Indo-Pacific region. The College of Business and Economics (CBE) supports the initiative through many of the Global Business Immersion (GBI) study tours.

The NCP Alumni Ambassadors Program was launched in 2017 to help NCP alumni maintain a connection with each other, the NCP itself and the Indo-Pacific region as alumni progress in their lives and careers. It also encourages them to promote the NCP and the value of Indo-Pacific study and work placements.

Hands-on experience

The GBI course typically involves a visit of up to 10 days in one or more countries and provides an opportunity for students to understand the cultural and historical dimensions that shape business practice abroad.

Rebecca had never visited any part of Asia, so when she saw an opportunity to take part in the 2018 GBI trip to Taiwan, she jumped at the chance.

“I really valued meeting and befriending Taiwanese students who provided first-hand accounts of living, studying and working in Taiwan and a unique insight into Taiwanese culture. I also loved the opportunity to meet other like-minded ANU students from a diverse range of degree disciplines and to hear about their personal experiences and opinions relating to the topics we covered in the course,” says Rebecca.

NCP Alumni Ambassador

In her role as an Alumni Ambassador, Rebecca collaborates with other ambassadors to organise social events for NCP alumni. She has also collaborated with ANU Global Programs to provide personal experiences and contacts for potential NCP scholars and mobility students.

“As an NCP Alumni Ambassador, I have joined a passionate and motivated network of fellow alumni promoting the NCP and the value of Indo-Pacific study and work placements. I also work with other university Alumni Ambassadors, ANU Global Programs, Asia-Link Business and DFAT to promote the NCP and foster a NCP alumni community.”

The NCP is open to all Australian undergraduates across Australia and supports around 10,000 students a year. By the end of 2020, NCP alumni will have grown to around 40,000 young Australians with experience of living, studying and undertaking work experience in the Indo-Pacific.

“My hope is that the NCP program will inspire more Australian students to learn more about the Indo-Pacific region and that most Australians learn to value economic and political relations with our regional neighbours in the years to come,” says Rebecca.
