Nidhi settles safely into life at ANU

18 February 2019

Nidhi Shankar Reddy is a College of Business and Economics student ambassador this year and has contributed a summary of her experiences on campus so far.

Coming to ANU was an amazing opportunity, but moving away from home to a different country seemed to be a very daunting task. I had to deal with not only home sickness but also adapting to a different environment and study pattern, all while managing my finances.

A new safety net

There were many things that my parents and I were concerned about, the most important factor being safety. All our nerves were put to rest after I visited ANU twice before I moved to Canberra and felt very comfortable after speaking to the representatives and academic advisors of ANU in Bangalore.

I feel safe on campus at any hour of the day because of ANU security and the ANU+ app that we can use when we feel vulnerable or scared and have a security guard accompany us and drive us back to my accommodation.

Social networks

I stayed on campus in a hall accommodation which helped me meet a lot of new people from diverse backgrounds as well as my friends. I didn’t feel as homesick there due to the social environment in halls and the events held by the accommodation and ANU.

This helped me get over my initial jitters due to the change in environment. I did not face any difficulty in adapting to the study pattern and having to write research papers for the first time, thanks largely to essay writing workshops and academic advisors.

ANU helped me transition with ease into uni life by providing the necessary help needed in terms of housing, workshops to manage finance, one on one sessions in times of stress, help desks to guide enrollment hassles and a lot of fun events to socialise. It has truly been an experience worth living.
