Choosing passion over childhood dreams

14 June 2019

3 minutes read

November 2018 was a month of serious deliberating for 18-year-old Gautham Gopinath. Stuck between the proverbial rock and a hard place, Gautham had to choose whether to fulfil his childhood dream of joining the Indian Navy or to pursue his passion for economics. Ultimately, he chose the latter.

“I would go back and forth repeatedly to make a choice, simply weighing the pros and cons on paper. That month of November was a window of dilemma but ultimately I chose to study,” Gautham recalled.

While his motivation to join the Navy was mainly to follow the footsteps of his father, a retired commander, he attributes his passion for economics to his high school teacher.

“This may sound like an absolute cliché but it is true. I had the same teacher in economics for over three years and I have to thank her for sparking my passion with this subject. Because of her I learnt the effects of theories and the interconnected nature of economics,” he said.

In his Year 12 Finals, Gautham had scored a centum or a perfect score in economics.

The 18-year-old believes that the academic ranking of the Australian National University (ANU) drew him to Canberra. Particularly the reviews and testaments he had read about the University’s College of Business and Economics (CBE).

Gautham started his ANU journey earlier this year and is pursuing a Bachelor in Economics. He is also the recipient of the prestigious ANU College of Business & Economics International Undergraduate Scholarship, which waivers off the entire tuition fees. He is one of the six international students who have received this award.

He feels that his academic exposure will certainly jumpstart his professional career. “The experience here is like a trampoline helping me get to newer heights. I am now keen to pursue an Honours degree at CBE. The overall experience so far at ANU has been a morale booster as I have been provided with a stepping stone to enter a new world,” he added.

After graduating, Gautham intends to use his passion for economics either in a career in academia or diplomacy.
