Catching uni-fever

11 October 2019

3 minute read

A few years ago, when Maliha Hoque dropped off her elder sister at The Australian National University (ANU) from Sydney she had an “instant connection."

“I remember catching the uni-fever. I walked around campus, went to my sister’s on-campus accommodation and then her classrooms; I was simply drawn to the culture. In particular, the aura from her college, the ANU College of Business and Economics (CBE), where she studied actuarial studies and commerce,” Maliha recalled.

In addition to the University’s vibrant learning community and her sister’s experience, it was the double degree program at ANU that proved to be the decisive factor for Maliha to choose ANU.

My academic experience at ANU has been amazing, I have been able to learn a lot about finance and science within such a short period of time.

“I’ve always been keenly interested in finance and science since I was in school. However, I didn’t think I could study them simultaneously at university since they aren’t traditionally complimentary, but also due to the lack of Australian universities offering the combination. However, the flexible double degree program at ANU has allowed me to study my dream degree,” Maliha shared.

After graduating as the youngest student from her high school cohort, Maliha commenced her ANU journey earlier this year and is the recipient of the inaugural Student Managed Fund (SMF) Scholarship.

“I am grateful to have been chosen to be the first recipient of the SMF scholarship. This scholarship means a lot to me, not only because it offsets the cost of moving interstate to study at ANU, but also I realise it’s the result of hard work and the business acumen of my fellow students,” said Maliha.

So far, she has found that her experience at ANU to be “rewarding and interesting."

"My academic experience at ANU has been amazing, I have been able to learn more about both fields of study within such a short period of time, which has allowed me to gain a balanced perspective on the current climate of finance and science in the real-world,” Maliha added.

Moreover, she feels that she is already taking the advantage of the opportunities that the University has to offer to enrich her academic experience.

“By studying finance and science at the same time, I have the unique opportunity to gain perspective from two differing fields of study. I will be equipped with the tools to provide a helping hand to those in need by the end of my degree,” Maliha said.
