MomentuM Professional Development Program

MomentuM Professional Development Program

Students gain MomentuM at ANU

28 August 2018

The ANU College of Business and Economics (CBE) has recently celebrated the graduation of the first cohort of students through, MomentuM, a flagship professional development program. The event was held at the QT Hotel, Canberra, and brought together all the students and mentors who took part in the program.

CBE works with industry partners to help run MomentuM. MomentuM is a 12-month professional development program in which students are connected with a mentor. Throughout that time, students have the opportunity to attend six workshops, monthly networking sessions, and several opportunities to take industry-led trainings.

Student employability is a core value and key strategic focus at CBE. MomentuM fits within that strategy and is a way to fully realise the whole student and not simply focus on their technical proficiency.  By the end the aim is for students to meets employer demand for well-rounded graduates who are job-ready and equipped with a full set of professional skills.

The success of the program lies in the confidence student’s gain after completing it, as recent MomentuM graduate Catherine Zupalla explains.

“Regardless of whether your mentor is in your dream job, or if they are working in a professional space, it’s a great opportunity to learn from them and pick up the skills, behaviours and habits, you, as a young professional, need to take on board and apply within your own professional pursuits.”

CBE’s Associate Dean of Education, Dr Bronwen Whiting, congratulated students, mentors and industry partners involved in the success of the pilot.

“MomentuM was designed to give students confidence. It was designed to help students gain an awareness of the reality of professional practise; to provide a space for students to develop a sense of self, to be self-assured when embarking on their professional journey.

“As we look back at the progress of our first cohort of MomentuM students, it is clear that, together with our industry partners, we have achieved these aims and made this program a success,” said Dr Whiting.

Anthony Matis, General Manager Education (International), CPA Australia believes the value of MomentuM to both students and industry cannot be underestimated.

“MomentuM addresses key areas of a student’s development throughout their journey as students through to alumni status. The merit in focusing on career education and talent development designed to enhance a student’s employability in the future shouldn't be understated” said Anthony Matis.

Applications for MomentuM open annually in May. For more information see the MomentuM website.
