Economics graduate starts Harvard journey

23 August 2018

ANU Tuckwell Scholar, Matthew Jacob, has started a two year Pre-Doctoral position at Harvard University in Boston, having graduated with a First Class Honours in Economics only eight months ago in December 2017.

Matthew will work with Professor Raj Chetty, the William A. Ackman Professor of Economics at Harvard University and also the Director of the Equality of Opportunity Project, which uses “big data” to understand how we can give children from disadvantaged backgrounds better chances of succeeding.

“I am really inspired by Professor Chetty’s work, which has been taken out of the academic environment and is really being applied” says Matthew.

“One of his more recent papers looks at racial inequality in the US, and he wants to have a real policy focus to his research which is something that is important to me.”

Matthew hopes to eventually complete his PhD in the US, having paved the way by recently completing a six month research position at Stanford University.

“Getting into Stanford was my big break. Not many research positions are available outside of Pre-Doctoral programs, which don't really exist in Australia. Most US universities have these programs but not many offer spaces to international students” he said.

Matthew credits his success in part to the on-campus experience at ANU, and life in Canberra.

“The ease of living is exceptional. Everything was within walking distance, everything was available and open to you and there was students around you. It really enabled me to immerse myself.”

Having gained experience as an intern at the Grattan Institute and also as in the office of Federal Member for Fenner, Hon Dr Andrew Leigh, Matthew knows he eventually hopes to work in the Australian policy space.

“For me, I want to end up in the public policy space here in Australia, and so I definitely want to move back to Australia, and work in the economic policy space.”
