Jesse Chang gives back to ANU

14 November 2018

ANU alumni, Jesse Chang, has partnered with the ANU College of Business and Economics (CBE) to create a truly unique scholarship. Through a significant donation to the College, and drawing on his own unique experience, Jesse hopes to see underprivileged Chinese students experience the same warm embrace he felt when he first came to Australia.

“I foresee the emergence of many talented Chinese ANU graduates from different backgrounds, who will add to the warm relationship between Australia and China. Without question, the scholarship recipients will experience the same Australian warmth and inclusion that I did,” said Jesse.

Born to Chinese parents, Jesse moved to Australia to attend high school at the age of 12. He did not return home for another six years, however, Jesse always felt that he had a home to go to, courtesy of his classmates. It’s hard to understate the impact this time had on Jesse.

“I consider Australia to be my home, as it is where I spent my formative years. During this time, I received much love and care from my schoolmates and their families,” reflects Jesse.

”I feel very lucky to have attended ANU and to complete a double degree.”

Jesse graduated from ANU with a Bachelor of Economics in 1977 and Bachelor of Laws in 1980. He founded TransAsia Lawyers in 1990, carving out a stellar career advising foreign clients on investment opportunities in China and advising Asian companies on their outbound activities.

In 2015 following his induction into the CBE Hall of Fame, Jesse began to consider how he could enable Chinese students living in regional areas to experience the life changing environment at ANU, just as he had.

“I suggested to ANU that I would be willing to initiate and support a scholarship, offering opportunities to candidates in China who face disadvantage in accessing university education.”

Giving back to ANU links Jesse’s own scholarship experience with his successful business career. Jesse is well-known and respected for his strategic thinking, negotiating skills and ability to advise effectively on delicate and complex matters. He specialises in market entry structures, joint ventures and M&A, partner selection, shareholder disputes and hostile takeovers.

He has advised Electronic Arts and Amazon extensively in the Internet sector. Jesse's media clients include NBC Universal, Disney, Time Warner, News Corp, John Woo, Lion Rock Productions, and Relativity Media.

In 1992 Jesse advised APT Satellite (China’s first commercial satellite company) from its inception to the launch of its first satellite. In 1991 Jesse advised Rupert Murdoch on NewsCorp’s Chinese market re-entry.

From 2011 Jesse has represented China Aviation Industry Corp (AVIC) for negotiations with multiple foreign partners for each segment of the C919 project, China’s first commercial aircraft.

Since his early teenage years in rural Queensland, Jesse has been driven by excellence. After all he has achieved, his reflection is succinct: “Dedication and hard work will overcome your shortcomings and, in turn, generate happiness!”

The ANU College of Business and Economics is very grateful to Jesse for his generous support for this unique and life changing scholarship.
