ANU economist wins ARC Future Fellowship

2 August 2018

In the latest ARC funding announcement by Education Minister the Hon Simon Birmingham; ANU economist, Dr Fedor Iskhakov from the ANU Research School of Economics (RSE), has been awarded an ARC Future Fellowship worth $857,585.

Professor Rabee Tourky, Director of the Research School of Economics and Trevor Swan Distinguished Professor of Economics said Dr Iskhakov is the third RSE economist to be recently awarded the prestigious fellowship.

“RSE is now home to three ARC Future Fellows, their outstanding achievements were a result of significant aptitude for economics research and dedication to understanding resource scarcities” said Professor Tourky.

Dr Iskhakov says his ARC Future Fellowship will be instrumental in informing government policy more accurately, and to better understand how value is created in economic markets.

“This project will support the development of more efficient and better-targeted policies in every area of the economy. The project focuses on developing novel statistical and computational techniques to study dynamic interactions of various economic agents on the market” said Dr Iskhakov.

“The project will provide better analytical tools to not only better understand observed economic behaviour but also more accurately inform government policy in the future.”

The announcement reinforces the impact of RSE in producing outstanding researchers with the prior success of previous ARC Future Fellows, Markus Brueckner and John Stachurski.

“I’m very proud of Fedor’s achievements in advancing our knowledge of structural estimation models” Professor Tourky said.

ANU College of Business and Economics (CBE), Interim Dean, Professor Steven Roberts said the latest ARC funding announcement highlighted the world class research being undertaken at RSE, confirming the School’s transformational leadership in economics research within Australia and the world.

“Our approach at the College is to invest in people and provide them with extensive research support to achieve excellence. Fedor has leveraged the research support provided by the university, to emerge as one of Australia’s leading mid-career researchers” Professor Roberts said.

"The ARC funding is welcome news for CBE and will help fund research that will support the devlopment of better policy. On behalf of the College, I congratulate Fedor and wish him success with his project."
