Inaugural scholarship award to honor ANU Alumna

31 March 2018

The Bhavita Patel Scholarship is a transformative scholarship established to commemorate ANU alumna and treasured Deloitte employee, Bhavita Patel.

The inaugural recipient in 2018 has been awarded to Melora Stokes from Moruya, NSW.
As the first recipient of the Bhavita Patel Scholarship in 2018, Melora begins her studies of a Bachelor of Commerce at the ANU College of Business and Economics (CBE).

The scholarship is awarded to a student studying at CBE who demonstrates a passion for learning and a commitment to the community.

The Bhavita Patel scholarship aims to improve access to tertiary education for students who may not otherwise be able to attend ANU, recognising and rewarding academic excellence. CBE may offer this scholarship every three to five years.

Bhavita died in January 2017 after an incident in Melbourne's CBD. She had a passion for learning and a deep commitment to the community. Thus, The Deloitte Foundation, in consultation with Bhavita's family, agreed that a scholarship at ANU, where Bhavita studied business before embarking on her successful career, would best honour her.

Melora reflects on her choice of studying at ANU, "The ANU has a very reputable name for academic success. I think both my degree in Commerce and the study environment at ANU will provide me with essential employability skills and a range of opportunities to allow me to succeed in the workforce."

"As a rural student who is required to move from home to further my education at the Australian National University, the scholarship will ensure for a smooth transition as I begin my studies and it will be reassurance for my family," Melora says.

To ensure the Bhavita Patel Scholarship is sustainable and perpetual, The Deloitte Foundation has formed an endowment fund. The Scholarship Fund is now open to contributions from all of Bhavita’s family, friends, colleagues and extended networks.

Director of The Deloitte Foundation, Gerry Voon, reflects on the Scholarship’s first recipient,

"We are thrilled that Melora is the worthy inaugural recipient of the Bhavita Patel Scholarship and are excited to see her passion for learning and engagement in social justice at the Australian National University," Ms Voon says.

"The Scholarship in honour of Bhavita Patel is a way for the Patel family, the ANU and Deloitte communities to remember Bhavita and continue her legacy. Bhavita was committed to serving her community and providing opportunities for disadvantaged students to access quality education," she continues.

Contributions will help ensure Bhavita's memory is honoured through providing disadvantaged students with an opportunity to access an education that may otherwise have been beyond their reach.
