Dixon-Walsh Scholarship

CBE and Dixon Advisory launch scholarship

29 August 2017

ANU alumnus Mr Alan Dixon and ANU Vice-Chancellor Professor Brian P. Schmidt AC FAA FRS have announced a landmark $1.35m scholarship donation to the ANU College of Business and Economics (CBE).

Mr Dixon, who graduated from CBE with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1995, established the scholarship to enable financially disadvantaged students to study at the ANU Research School of Finance, Actuarial Studies and Statistics (RSFAS) at CBE.

Mr Dixon, now based in New York, said that ANU remained an important part of his own journey to success.

“ANU is a very special place and it is fantastic to be able to give back,” Mr Dixon said.

Professor Schmidt said he was delighted to launch the new scholarship endowment, which aligns with his vision for ANU as a vehicle for social change.

“This is a great day of celebration. I am delighted that Alan has chosen to create this scholarship to celebrate the friendship between the Dixon - Walsh families and for it to be a celebration of Dixon Advisory's connection to Canberra and to ANU.” Professor Schmidt said.

“Equity scholarships sit right at the top of the Strategic Plan for ANU because of their transformative impact. This gift from Alan is a remarkable act of generosity.”

The Dixon-Walsh Scholarship will be offered annually, in perpetuity. Each recipient will receive up to $50,000 over five years, enabling students to pursue the unique ANU Flexible Double Degree program or a combined degree with Honours.

Mr Dixon named the scholarship in honour of the friendship between his father, Mr Daryl Dixon, and his colleague and lifelong friend, Mr Max Walsh AM who both have spent over a decade mentoring Alan.

Mr Dixon noted that if it wasn’t for the scholarships his father had won to both the University of Queensland and then Cambridge University in the UK he wouldn’t have had the opportunity to have such a successful career.

Max and Daryl are very hopeful that one part of their legacy will be an amazing set of scholars at the ANU.

Professor Steven Roberts, Interim CBE Dean, said the scholarship is a critical step in ensuring finance is not a barrier for talented students wishing to study at ANU.

“This gift marks a significant milestone in CBE’s philanthropic journey and will deliver significant impact for disadvantaged students in perpetuity,” he said.

The first recipient of the Dixon-Walsh Scholarship will start their ANU educational journey in 2018; applications for the scholarship are now open.
