Brittany Ryan

Brittany Ryan

From the classroom to consultant

1 January 2017

It’s a celebratory time of year the world round. For Brittany Ryan, who this week graduates with Bachelor of Actuarial Studies from the ANU College of Business and Economics (CBE) and a new job, the celebrations are even sweeter.

Hailing from Melbourne, Brittany left her home city for the nation’s capital and the ANU, aspiring to a career in an actuarial-related field.

“It was weird not knowing anyone in a city but the transition after the first week was great and I've loved Canberra ever since,” she says.

Brittany credits the unique campus life at ANU for helping her establish herself in Canberra, and grow both socially and academically.

“Unlike larger cities, the majority of students live on or close to campus. This makes it almost too easy to not leave campus for weeks at a time and still see all of your friends and attend classes. I am more open-minded as a result of so many people migrating to ANU, domestically and internationally - you learn things you never knew you never knew,” she said.

Looking back on her time at CBE, Brittany says she feels much the same about the College as she did when she arrived.

“I am still humbled by the knowledge of lecturers and am in awe of many of my fellow students in CBE, much like I was on my first day of lectures,” she says.

However, it was the opportunity to tutor statistics in her final semester that Brittany says was the highlight of her time at ANU. “I have a new found appreciation for my tutors, the hours they have to put in marking and you really get to see a whole range of students.”

Benefiting from the experience of an internship with PricewaterhouseCoopers, which she completed at the start of 2016, Brittany will commence full time work as an Actuarial Consultant at PwC in Sydney in 2017.

“My studies have definitely helped but it's the extra programs, opportunities and lecturers that have gone above the minimum that have really prepared me,” said Brittany. “After my internship I got a taste of some really interesting work and I can't wait to be a part of it.”
