Banking as Endogenous Institutions: Market Power and Macro Policy Design

Join us to learn more about what it takes to design good public policy in the banking sector.

In this presentation, Associate Professor Tim Kam will discuss how his research on equilibrium, policy-dependent banking-sector concentration rationalises empirical observations on the relationship between loan-rate dispersion and mark-ups, and why central banks and regulators are rightfully concerned about banks' market power.

He will also share his insights on how banks trade-off their intensive and extensive margins of loan sales, which affects their welfare insurance role.

About the presenter

Associate Professor Tim Kam works within CBE’s Research School of Economics. His research areas include Macroeconomics, Monetary Economics, Computational Economics, and Politics and Growth

He is currently interested in the redistributive role of monetary and fiscal policies in heterogeneous-agent economies where the liquidity properties of money and other financial assets are non-trivially obtained as equilibrium phenomena. He develops a competitive search environment with endogenous market segmentation to address these questions.
