Mitchell Scholarship for First Year Rural Students

Overview

The Mitchell Scholarship is available to those students who:

  • Are enrolled in the first year of a Bachelor degree course offered in the Faculty of Economics and Commerce at the ANU either as a full time or part time student;
  • Are new to tertiary education;
  • Have been schooled in, and have their permanent home address in a rural area;
  • Would have had low or medium access to tertiary education from home;
  • Are Australian citizens, or hold permanent residence status in Australia; and
  • Are able to provide evidence of financial need.

The selection committee shall also take into account the level of academic results on which you admission to the University has been based.

Detailed Award Conditions

1. There shall be a scholarship for award by the Council each year known as the Mitchell Scholarship.

2. The scholarship shall be valued at $1,000.

3. Eligible applicants shall:

(i) be enrolled in the first year of the course leading to a Degree of Bachelor offered in the Faculty of Economics and Commerce on either a full or part-time basis;

(ii) be new to tertiary education;

(iii) have been schooled in and have their permanent homes in a rural area;

(iv) have had low or medium access to tertiary education from their home;

(v) be able to provide evidence of financial need; and

(vi) be Australian citizens or hold Permanent Residence Status in Australia.

4. In any year the Selection Committee shall take into account the definition of ‘rural’ and ‘geographically isolated’ and ‘low or medium access to tertiary education’ as set out by the Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs but shall make the final determination on whether an application is eligible for consideration.

5. Financial need shall be determined by the Selection Committee following receipt of the completed application form and provision by the applicant of all information requested.

6. The selection for the scholarship shall be primarily on academic merit within the criteria set out in Clauses 3,4 and 5 above.

7. The closing date for receipt of applications shall be determined from time to time by the Selection Committee but under normal circumstances shall be the last day of the first teaching period of First Semester.

8. The scholarship shall not be shared.

9. The scholarship shall be paid in equal instalments, one at the beginning of each semester.

10. The scholarship shall be awarded on the recommendation of a Selection Committee chaired by the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Commerce (or nominee).

11. A scholarship shall not be awarded when, in the opinion of the Selection Panel, there is no applicant of sufficient merit.

12. If the scholar withdraws from the course the University Awards Committee may determine that the scholarship instalment for the semester in which the withdrawal occurs shall be refunded by the student to the University on a pro-rata basis as at the date of withdrawal.

13. If the student’s performance in the first semester of study is unsatisfactory in the opinion of the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Commerce, payment of the scholarship allowance for the second semester may be withheld.
