Important Changes - CPA Associate Status

From January 1 2004 the Alternative Associate Sequences for CPA Australia are being phased out. CPA Australia is allowing a transitional period of one year for students completing their program in 2004. Such students may apply for membership of CPA as an Associate until 31 December 2004. This means that ANU students who have not completed the Professional Accounting sequence as part of their degree, but who want to apply for Associate membership using the Alternative Associate Sequences of either Management Accounting, Finance or Information Technology must do so before 31 December 2004. Associate Status (ASA) From 2004

To qualify for Associate Membership, a student must:

a) Hold an ANU degree:- BComm, BeComm, BFin, BEc (or a relevant combined degree) with passes in:

  • BUSN1001 - Business Reporting and Analysis
  • BUSN1002 - Accounting Processes and Systems
  • BUSN1101* - Introduction to Commercial Law
  • ECON1101 - Microeconomics 1
  • ECON1102 - Macroeconomics 1
  • STAT1008 - Quantitative Research Methods (STAT2001 Introductory Mathematical Statistics will be accepted as an alternative)
  • INFS1001 - Foundations of Electronic Commerce and Information Systems
  • FINM1001 - Money Markets and Finance (or FINM2001 Corporate Finance completed prior to 2004)
  • BUSN2101* - Law of Business Entities
  • BUSN2011 - Management Accounting
  • BUSN2015 - Company Accounting

plus ONE of the following courses

BUSN3002 Auditing and BUSN3014 Principles of Taxation Law are optional, but students should be aware of requirement (c) below.

Students enrolled in a combined degree with Law substitute all of the following:

  • LAWS1202 - Lawyers, Justice and Ethics
  • LAWS1204 - Contracts
  • LAWS2203 - Corporations Law

Certified Practising Accountant (CPA)

The academic requirements for advancement to CPA status require candidates to have:

a) completed all of the requirements for Associate status;

b) Successfully completed the CPA program;

c) Completed courses in audit and taxation either as part of an accredited Australian undergraduate degree or postgraduate degree or as part of the CPA Program.  (International students must complete audit and taxation as part of an accredited Australian degree);

d) Three years supervised or five years unsupervised relevant work experience (which may be obtained overseas).

From 2004, students should be aware that up to two exemptions in the CPA program will be offered to candidates with an accredited undergraduate degree and an approved specialist masters degree, such as Master of Finance, Commerce or Information Systems.
