CIMA is an independent organisation based in the UK with over 50,000 members worldwide.  The purpose of CIMA is "to promote and develop the science of management accountancy and to foster and maintain investigations and research into the best means and methods of developing and applying such science, and to encourage, increase, disseminate and promote knowledge, education, training and the exchange of information and ideas in respect of all questions relating to or connected therewith".

The CIMA qualification is recognised internationally.  Admission to Associate Membership (ACMA) requires completion of the CIMA examinations plus three years relevant experience.  CIMA grands students with accredited courses exemptions from some of their examination papers.  The CIMA examination covers three stages.

In the case of the ANU, students completing a Bachelor of Commerce with a major in Accounting are exempt from the five foundation papers and five of the intermediate papers of the CIMA qualification.

Advancement to Fellowship Status in CIMA (FCMA) requires a further three years of experience in a senior and responsible position after satisfying the educational requirements for Associate level membership.
