AdmissionRequirements

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

To be admitted into the PhD Program in Economics, candidates must have one of the following:

i. A degree of bachelor with first or upper second class honours in economics from an approved university and have completed, at a sufficiently high standard, studies equivalent to the undergraduate course Mathematics for Economists A (ECON2125)
ii. A degree of bachelor with first or upper second class honours in mathematics and/or statistics from an approved university which includes a major (or equivalent) in economics and have obtained a pass at least at the level of distinction in a third-year economics course
iii. The ANU Master of International Development and Economics or Master of Economics with passes in Mathematical Techniques I and II (ECON8013 and ECON8014), and have achieved results that are deemed by the Convener to be at least equivalent to upper second class honours at the ANU
iv. The ANU Graduate Diploma in Economics with passes in Mathematical Techniques I and II (ECON8013 and ECON8014), or an equivalent postgraduate qualification from an approved university, and have achieved results that are deemed by the Convener to be at least equivalent to upper second class honours at the ANU

The Convener of the PhD program may, at his or her discretion, require a candidate to enroll initially in one of the ANU Masters degrees in the graduate studies field of Economics, rather than the PhD.

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not a prerequisite for admission, nor for scholarships. However, other things being equal, preference will be given to applicants with high scores in the GRE. Students who plan to take only one test should take the General Test. Good scores on the Writing Assessment and/or on the Mathematics subject test will also help students gain offers of admission and scholarships.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

An international student who is not a native English speaker must provide evidence that English was the medium of instruction in their latest degree and/or submit evidence of an IELTS with an overall score of 6.5 with no component less than 6.0 or submit evidence of a TOEFL score of at least 230 with at least 4.5 in the essay component.
