Overview
The National Centre for Information Systems Research (NCISR) at the Australian National University
in Canberra has, as a primary aim, the conduct of research relevant to government, industry and business
in e-government and e-commerce and information systems. The group achieves this aim through close links
with business organizations, industry associations, government bodies, and consulting groups. Applied
research projects and consultancies are undertaken.
Canberra is Australia’s capital and the centre of government. Thus, the group can work closely with government
organizations with an interest in e-commerce and e-government. The group can draw on staff with expertise in
all areas of business from its base in the Faculty of Economics and Commerce. Staff are active in research
collaboration with other academic institutions, industry and government. In particular, the Faculty has
strong associations with government agencies such as the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Department of
Finance & Administration and Treasury, and Department of Communications, Information Technology and the
Arts. The Faculty is recognized as a leader in the areas of economic policy analysis, accounting and
finance, applied statistics and econometric modelling.
The key research areas of the centre are:
Strategic use of e-commerce at organizational, industry and
national levels.
This research concerns the uptake, adoption and facilitation of
e-commerce at the national, industry and organizational level. Research
areas concern e-commerce policy, national infrastructure, diffusion and
innovation, and evaluation of information systems. Current projects include
an ARC project on e-commerce in agribusiness and consultancy work in
developing countries.
Web systems engineering
This research concerns the analysis, design, and evaluation of
Information Systems delivered over the World Wide Web. Underlying theory is
drawn from the analysis and design of more conventional systems, as well as
the areas of human-computer interaction and intelligent systems. The theme
allows collaboration with other disciplinary areas, such as computer
science, marketing and finance. A current project is the design of
intelligent tools for use in computerized share trading systems.
Use of Information Systems by government
This research area concerns the use of information systems by government
agencies for organizational purposes and also for delivery of e-government.
The research is particularly appropriate for the ANU e-commerce group
because of its situation in Canberra, which allows collaboration with bodies
such as the National Office of the Information Economy. PhD students are
investigating the use of Enterprise Resource systems in government agencies.
