Program Requirements

Candidates for the PhD submit a thesis of not more than 100,000 words.  The thesis must make a substantial contribution to learning and demonstrate a capacity to relate the research done by the candidate to the broader framework of the relevant discipline within which it falls, at the standard internationally recognised for the degree.

In some programs, candidates may also be required to complete coursework in their first year of study.

Commencement and Duration

Students may commence their PhD studies at any time after accepting an offer.  Students should be aware of the timing of any coursework component that they may be required to undertake in their PhD studies and are required to consult with their PhD program convener before enrolling.

A normal PhD program is completed over three years full time.

Admission requirements

Potential candidates must have completed a bachelor's degree with Honours of at least upper-second class in a relevant discipline, or equivalent.  Entry is also dependent upon the suitability of the candidate to undertake a major research project and a topic area needs to be approved.

In many programs, student progress is assessed at the end of a compulsory coursework component.  Students must meet progress requirements set by the Program Convener in the relevant discipline.

Students must submit an annual report on their progress, and in most programs complete a mid-term review.
