| Management is a process of identifying and deciding upon
goals and directions, and then working with people and financial and other
resources to achieve them. The field includes the study of strategy,
entrepreneurship, innovation, leadership, managing people and organisations,
managing projects and finances, and bringing all the specialist business
disciplines to bear on the delivery of meaningful outcomes.
The programs and courses offered in management are designed
to focus on what managers do in real life:
- Defining the role of the organisation in its broader
context and framing the issues it is going to work on
- Determining appropriate strategies and structures for
pursuing those issues
- Organising, communicating with, motivating and
developing people – both as individuals and in teams
- Planning work tasks, negotiating financial and other resources,
and monitoring performance against plans
- Evaluating and reflecting on outcomes, learning, reviewing
and setting priorities for the next cycle of activity.
The ANU is a great place to learn about management because the
programs and courses here:
- Combine understanding of the latest theoretical
developments with practice and applications. We view management as an applied
set of skills.
- Incorporate an explicit focus on the dynamic role of
managers as entrepreneurs, innovators, change agents, responsible for
initiatives that will give forward momentum to their organisations
- Emphasise the international context of management.
Australia
is a medium-sized country in global terms and managers need to be alert to
developments in the international environment.
- Provide links between management and other core
strengths of the ANU in the sciences and the arts, in technology and in
government.
ANU students can study aspects of management in several
ways:
- Elective subjects in the field of management,
incorporated into programs and degrees in other disciplines
- A management major in the BComm degree,
comprising six semester length courses
- A Bachelor of Business
Administration degree – commencing in 2009 – will have a strategic
management major
- An Honours program in management in the BComm degree
- Master of Business degree with a management specialisation
- MPhil and PhD degrees by research.
The ANU also offers a Master of
Business Administration degree, a Master
of Management degree and a Graduate
Certificate in Management. These degrees are designed for individuals
who have already been working professionally since completing their
undergraduate degrees, and who want to equip themselves with the skills and
competencies that will enhance their management careers.
Coursework in the management discipline aims to build the
leadership skills and managerial competencies that graduates need. The management discipline at ANU places a strong emphasis on developing
students’ ability to logically diagnose management problems through case
studies, presentations and simulations, and individual and group projects. Our
aim is to ensure that graduates have the skills to lead teams, to develop
strategic plans, to set goals and to motivate others. Our focus is on ensuring
that students have a solid understanding of key management concepts and
techniques and feel confident about their ability to develop solutions to complex
organisational problems.
Staff members in the management disciplines combine academic
experience in research and teaching with many years of experience as practicing
managers in a wide range of organisations in both the public and the private
sectors. Members of the management faculty are regularly engaged by Australian
and international organisations to provide advice on management and strategy,
and this provides rich opportunities for testing emerging theories in a
practical, applied context and for generating new management knowledge.
Students and graduates may apply for membership of several
professional associations, including:
- Australian Institute
of Management
- Australian Institute
of Project Managers
- Australian and
New Zealand Academy of Management
- Australian Human
Resources Institute.
Staff members in the discipline have active research
agendas. They regularly present the outcomes of research at seminars, national
and international conferences and professional association meetings. Their
research interests include:
- Innovation, commercialisation and entrepreneurship
- Project management
- International and cross-cultural management
- Human resources management and employment relations
- Leadership
- Public sector management.
