International Business

 

International business is a rapidly growing field of study dealing with the development, strategy and management of multinational enterprises in an increasingly complex and dynamically changing global context. The field includes the study of strategic and structural dynamics of multinational enterprises, and the interaction between such firms and the international markets and the cultural and political environments in which they operate.

The ANU is well-placed to accommodate student interest in international business. It

  • has an excellent international reputation for its research; cutting-edge research informs the teaching programs
  • is truly international in terms of teaching staff and student population
  • has first-rate resources for both research and teaching
  • maintains active interactions with Australian government departments, missions of foreign countries, industry associations, and universities world-wide

ANU students study aspects of international business in several ways:

Coursework in the international business discipline furthers the conceptual and social skills that graduates need, and their understanding of the multifaceted global business environment.  Courses use a range of stimulating approaches to engage students, including: lectures, interactive tutorials, discussions, student presentations, case studies, individual and group projects, business strategy games. Courses attract a large proportion of international students. The diversity of students enhances the understanding of the international nature of the discipline.

Staff members in the discipline have extensive teaching experience in Australia , Asia, Europe and the Americas . They are committed to maintaining high standards of teaching quality, and to assisting students in achieving their goals through practical and positive learning experiences. 

Students and graduates may apply for membership of several professional associations, including:

Staff members in the discipline have active research agendas. They regularly present outcomes of research at seminars, national and international conferences, and professional association meetings. Their research interests include:

  • cross-cultural negotiations in Asia
  • business strategy in China and Southeast Asia
  • business management in Asia
  • foreign direct investment in China and Southeast Asia
  • human resource management in Asia
  • international business strategies
  • international project management
  • internationalization of Chinese firms

Staff members supervise research students in the honours, MPhil and PhD programs. Current students study a wide range of exciting topics in areas like international business strategy, the structures and management practices of international firms, cross-cultural management, international trade and investment, technological transfer, international finance etc. Most research projects are set in the context of the Asia-Pacific region or countries in this region.  

For further information regarding the International Business discipline at ANU, please contact Dr Fuming Jiang. Most staff members are located in the School of Management, Marketing, and International Business, but the discipline combines the expertise of staff members across the ANU.
