Actuarial studies combines studies in economics, finance, mathematics and statistics to develop techniques and skills to assess, evaluate and manage future financial risk and thereby address a wide range of practical problems in long-term financial planning and management.
The Institute of Actuaries of Australia The Institute of Actuaries of Australia (http://www.actuaries.asn.au) is the body that governs the conduct of the actuarial profession in Australia. Amongst other things, it sets professional standards and a code of conduct which all actuaries must abide by, as well as setting the syllabus for qualification as an actuary.
Membership is open to everyone who is interested in an actuarial career. Membership entitlements include such items as the IAAust quarterly journal, copies of papers that members present at sessional meetings, The Actuary magazine and employment opportunities that are distributed by the Institute. Application forms can be found at www.actuaries.asn.au.We would suggest that you should join the IAAust in your third or honours year at the University. There are two advantages to joining at this time. Firstly, the entrance fee and annual subscription are less if you join IAAust as a full-time student than if you wait until you finish your degree. Secondly, and more importantly, joining the IAAust gives you access to the employment opportunities that are distributed to members.
