Welcome to the ANU Economics PhD Program
The program is designed to equip candidates with the research skills, breadth of knowledge and depth of understanding expected of PhD graduates in Economics in the academic, commercial and public spheres.
The Australian National University has the largest concentration of economists among all universities in Australia. There are more than seventy economists working in departments and centres across five Colleges at ANU. This breadth of expertise provides a rich environment for research training, ideal for doctoral studies.
Our PhDs find jobs at universities, government institutions and private businesses in Australia and overseas. Some of our
recent graduates are now working at the Australian Treasury, the OECD, the Asian Development Bank, Franklin Templeton Investments, the Melbourne Institute of Economic and Social Research, the University of Sydney and Monash University. There are currently more than 80 PhD students in the Program.
The program of full-time study normally occupies a period of three years, comprising two parts: a coursework component (Part A) and a thesis component (Part B). In the coursework component, students learn the fundamentals of general economic theory and research methods, and get the opportunity to take courses in their field of interest. In the research component, the students contribute to their field of specialisation under the supervision of a panel of active researchers from whom they also learn some tacit knowledge that cannot be learnt in a classroom.
PhD students are affiliated with the ANU department or centre that their main supervisors are located at, but their progress is overseen by the Board of Studies of the PhD Program. The Board of Studies has one representative from each of the four larger economics units at ANU, and a Convener. This website is maintained by the Board of Studies and provides information about the application process and admission requirements, degree structure, progress criteria, the examination process and all academic matters that apply uniformly to all economics PhD students at ANU. For information about departmental scholarships, departmental seminars, office space, computer support, and other facilities and services available to PhD students, please refer to the websites of economics departments and centres at ANU.
