Please note, the College has recently approved changes to the way Advanced Standing is assessed and awarded to new students. As such, the information on this website may be out of date and is currently being reviewed and updated. Please be aware that any Advanced Standing you are awarded may differ from that stipulated on this website.

Advanced Standing for Previous Studies (Undergraduate)

The College will consider granting advanced standing (also called 'advanced standing' or 'credit transfer') for relevant and equivalent prior studies.

Applicants should note that the granting of advanced standing is not automatic, and must be applied for either on the program application form or, for current students, on a separate advanced standing application. Applications for advanced standing are considered on a case-by-case basis, except for the programs at institutions listed in the 'Predetermined Advanced Standing' section below. Enquiries concerning advanced standing should be directed to the College Office. Note that it is the student's responsibility to supply all documentation relevant to the consideration of a case for advanced standing.

Advanced Standing for Summer School Subjects

Special provisions apply to the granting of advanced standing for subjects completed at a summer school or summer program.

  • For studies completed within the College - advanced standing is granted in accordance with the general guidelines listed below.

  • For studies completed at other summer schools:
    • No more than 12 units of advanced standing in total will be granted for subjects completed at a summer session over the duration of a degree.
    • The summer subject must be judged to be fully equivalent to the ANU subject for which advanced standing is being sought.
    • At least 96 units must be completed before advanced standing is applied for (which can include subjects being completed in the current semester). Further, at least 72 of these units must be from the College of Economics and Commerce.

Predetermined Advanced Standing

The College has already determined the advanced standing it is prepared to give for graduates of particular programs in particular institutions in the following countries.

Guidelines for the determination of advanced standing

Students may apply for advanced standing provided it is in writing and all relevant documentation is supplied. The following guidelines will assist students in deciding whether to make an advanced standing application. Note these guidelines apply only to undergraduate programs. Students seeking advanced standing for graduate programs are advised to contact the College Office.

  1. All advanced standing requests must be made in writing and lodged with the College Office. It is the student's responsibility to supply all relevant documentation (ie. syllabus, contact hours, list of topics). Specific inquiries should be addressed to the Manager, FEC Student Administration.
  2. Students seeking advanced standing for study completed outside the College can be awarded advanced standing up to and including a value of 72 units provided that the completed study does not form part of the requirements for qualification or receipt of a degree, diploma, certificate or other award.
  3. Students seeking advanced standing for completed study that forms part of the requirements for qualification or receipt of a degree, diploma, certificate or other award can be awarded advanced standing up to and including a value of 48 units in total based on that study or studies in the case of multiple awards.
  4. Specified advanced standing will be awarded only when the completed study is equivalent in content and depth of study to the ANU subject. Unspecified advanced standing will be awarded when the level of completed study is equivalent to ANU subject. Unspecified in-College advanced standing shall be awarded when the completed study is in a subject area consistent with the College's disciplines.
  5. Advanced standing will not be granted for work carried out, or a subject passed, more than the 10 years before the date on which the student applies for advanced standing for that work or subject, unless exceptional circumstances prevail.
  6. Where advanced standing is granted, the maximum time limit for completion of the relevant program (either single or combined degree program) will be reduced by one year for each 24 units of advanced standing awarded. In cases of rounding values of units less than 24 unit multiples, the effects of any rounding shall work to extend rather than shorten the maximum time limit.
  7. Students will be advised in writing of any change in their maximum time limit for completion of their program within one month of receiving advanced standing.
  8. No advanced standing will be granted for studies completed outside the College for the Honours Year.
  9. Students may apply for advanced standing for subjects taken at a summer school. Special provisions apply to the granting of advanced standing for subjects completed in a summer school or program.
  10. Advanced standing applications are considered on a case-by-case basis unless the program has been already been assessed and approved as one where predetermined advanced standing exists.
